DEFENDING champions, Kampala, open their title campaign when they take on West Nile in the third edition of the FUFA/MTN Inter Regional football championship that kicks off tomorrow at King George IV Memorial Stadium in Tororo.
Hosts Eastern clash against Northern in the other match of the opening day at the same venue in a Group A action that kicks off at 4pm.
Sponsors MTN salvaged the revived competition at the eleventh hour when they delivered the sh70m package yesterday afternoon.
The competition was until yesterday morning in jeopardy as FUFA only depended on the sponsorship package to stage it.
The package is meant for hotel accommodation, feeding, transport, referees’ allowances and the prize money.
The winner will bag sh4m, runner-up sh2.5m, the third finisher will get sh1.5m while the fourth takes sh1m.
The teams have been placed in two groups with Eastern, Northern and Western in Group A, while Kampala, West Nile and Buganda constitute Group B.
The Western region is also optimistic of challenging for the accolade. Western opens against Northern and faces hosts Eastern tomorrow, adds Aloysius Byamukama.
The 18 man squad that made the Tororo journey yesterday was named from the 28 players that have been going through drills for 10 days at Rugando.
Western region football chairman Abbas Ssendyowa said the team has prepared enough to face any opponents.
“The players have been impressive during training and we hope to challenge for the title,†Ssendyowa said.
The team will majorly rely on the services of goalkeeper Sadiq, mid-fielders Didas Sande and Ayub Bogere while striker Yusuf Abaho will hunt for the goals.
