Landlords in Limu parish, Laroo division in Gulu municipality want single women and men evicted from the area. This follows a recent increase in cases of immorality in the area.

Following a meeting convened LC1 chairman Sylvester Ojuru and area landlords last Thursday, the community filed a petition at Laroo division head office demanding that a bi-law is enacted against unmarried people staying in the area.

Ojuru said only employed unmarried men and women would be tolerated in the area if the bi-law was passed.

“They have a stable source of income, but those who are jobless jeopardise the area’s security because they are potential criminals,” he said.

The decision comes two weeks after a four-year-old child, Roney Opio, was burnt to death while his single mother identified, Christine Acayo, was away at a night club.

“If Acayo was a married woman, her husband would have saved the child,” said Ojuru.

He regretted that many unmarried people turned to prostitution and robbery to make ends meet.

Tom Kilama, a landlord in the area, supported Ojuru’s decision. He said married people did not share houses, paid-up there rent on time and were easy to supervise, compared to people who were single and lived in groups.
