Uganda’s third ranked chess player, Patrick Kawuma will launch his title campaign at the ongoing 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China when he faces Armenian Grand Master Andriasyan Zaren this morning.

On board 6 at the Plum Blossom Hall of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition center, Candidate Master Kawuma will be the underdog but he is very optimistic that he will gain victory.

“I know my opponent has a lot of experience but I will give it my very best and try to win,” said the confident 21 year old second year Software Engineering student at Makerere University.

Kawuma who is Africa’s highly ranked university student and the only candidate master at this event is a medal hopeful for Uganda but first he has to win the first round game.

His other Ugandan counterparts who have no points, David Muwanguzi (MUK), Allan Mathias Ssonko (MUK) and Arthur Ssegwanyi are eyeing victories in round one too.

According to head of delegation Vincent Kisenyi, the Ugandan contingent is very motivated and focused on winning medals as well as enjoying the World University Games, an attribute that is important for the students.

“They are ready to compete against the world and I know for a fact that they are motivated,” said an emphatic Kisenyi, also the vice president of National University of Sports Federation in Uganda (NUSFU).
