PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has commended the people and leaders of Bulambuli district in eastern Uganda for availing land for Indian entrepreneurs to plant sugar cane and construct a sugar factory.
Museveni disclosed that the investors from India were ready to start sugar production activities in the area, adding that the Government would assist them.
The President was speaking at Bungwanyi Primary School in Bulambuli during the thanksgiving prayers in honour of energy and mineral resources minister Irene Muloni, who is also the area MP.
The President was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Janet Museveni.
Museveni also affirmed that the Government would continue with its Mukono sugar cane programme. A fortnight ago, Museveni announced that the degraded part of Mabira forest will be given to the Mehta Group’s Sugar Corporation of Uganda Ltd (SCOUL) to expand sugar production. His announcement has, however, provoked a lot of public criticism.
Museveni thanked the Bulambuli people for electing Muloni and the NRM during the February presidential elections. He commended the new energy minister for not being involved in conflicts. He, however, cautioned the leaders and wananchi against unprincipled conflicts.
Museveni also lauded the residents of Bulambuli for rejecting the people that are involved in the opposition walk-to-work protests. He unequivocally condemned the elements involved for causing the destruction of people’s property.
Regarding the issue of stability in the area, the President instructed the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) division commander to deploy enough soldiers to apprehend Karimojong cattle rustlers who were terrorising residents.
Museveni said the Government would promote irrigation programmes in Bugisu, Kasese and Bundibugyo. This, he said, will increase agricultural production and ensure food security.
The President also criticised Bugisu Co-operative Union officials for distributing the union’s funds that were used to fight the NRM.
On the issue of people displaced from Mt. Elgon areas, Museveni assured them that the Government would assist them in resettling them.
Muloni saluted the President for appointing her to a ministerial position and for gracing the occasion.
The Umukhuka wa Masaba, Wilson Wamimbi, briefed the President on the proposed project to construct a $3.2m hydroelectric power station in Bulambuli.
