THE Government is conducting a pilot population and housing census in preparation for the national census next year.

The exercise is being done in 21 districts.

The pilot census being carried out by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) kicked off yesterday.

The districts in the pilot exercise are Kanungu, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Kasese, Lwengo, Buvuma, Mpigi, Mityana, Nakasongola, Kaabong and Busia.

Others are Sironko, Otuke, Kitgum, Nebbi, Maracha, Tororo, Namutumba, Hoima, Jinja and Apac.

Both UBOS and the Population Secretariat projections put the Ugandan population at about 33m people, up from the 24m established in the 2002 census.

The UBOS manager for communication and public relations, Godfrey Nabongo, said the pilot exercise is likely to cost about sh1bn.

The national census carried out every 10 years, is intended to ascertain the actual number of people in the country to enable the Government to plan for them.
