The first batch of Ugandan athletes has arrived in Daegu, Korea, where they will be representing Uganda in the World Athletics championships.

Africa triple jump champion Sarah Nambawa and 800m runner Julius Mutekanga have arrived in the Asian city ahead of the biennial games that start Sunday.

The duo will be joined by the men’s steeplechase team of Benjamin Kiplagat, Jacob Araptany and Simon Ayeko, who fly out Thursday with Godfrey Nuwagaba to the event.

They were due to fly out with Moses Kipsiro, who officially wrote to the federation pulling out of the event.

Kipsiro had indicated that he might pull out of the event earlier, but the federation told him to sleep over it and when he made up the decision on Tuesday evening; they asked him to officially write indicating the reason why.

He sighted his physical and mental state as reason for the pulling out as he was not ready.

The team will be joined by Annet Negesa, Geoffrey Kusuro, Moses Kibet and Abraham Kiplimo , who fly out of the country Saturday, before marathoners Stephen Kiprotich, Nicholas Kiprono and Daniel Chepyegon join them on Wednesday.
