Africa Triple jump champion Sarah Nambawa had a rude welcome to the World Athletics Championships when she failed to advance to the finals of the women triple jump today morning.
Nambawa leapt to 13.22m, 0.8m away from her personal best of 14.05m in her second jump at Daegu, Korea.
She immediately announced that she was changing her focus to the All Africa Games. She had managed 11.6m in her first leap and 13.19m in her second leap.
The organizers had put 14.45 as the qualifying mark for the finals but with only three runners hitting that mark, they took the top 9 performers to make the 12 finalists. Nambawa’s distance was 33 out of the 34 competitors.
The other African women triple jumper, Algeria’s Baya Rahoul jumped 14.30m to qualify for the finals as one of the best losers.
It will be a rest day for Ugandan runners Wednesday with action returning Thursday with the 3000m steeplechase men’s final and 5000m semifinals.
Jacob Araptany and Benjamin Kiplagat will be competing in the finals, while Geoffrey Kusuro, Abraham Kiplimo and Moses Kibet will be competing in the 5000m preliminaries.
