UPC wants a 50% pay rise for teachers

UGANDA People’s Congress (UPC) has asked Government to increase the teachers’ salary by at least 50%.
In an urgent press statement issued by the party’s spokesperson on Monday, Vincent Nuwagaba said the 18% salary rise proposed by Government is too small compared to the prevailing economic crisis in the country.
Nuwagaba also condemned the Government’s threats to sack teachers who refuse to teach.
The Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi over the weekend warned that teachers who abscond from duty at the opening of the schools term will be sacked.
Nuwagaba described the Government’s move as ridiculous, arbitrary, and untenable and will be counterproductive.
He added that it is very possible that teachers can re-appear at school only to protect their jobs but without teaching throughout the whole term. “How will Government guard against this?†he asked.
He said like other civil servants, teachers need money to meet personal and family needs, like medication, schools fees and house rents among others.
Nuwagaba stressed that teachers must be psychologically stable if they are to offer quality education.
“It is unimaginable, for one to think that a teacher can concentrate on his work when his or her own children have been chased from school over unpaid fees,†he noted.
