FOUR people died instantly and 11 others were injured early on Saturday when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a Mercedes Benz lorry that was carrying building materials.

The accident occurred at Nyakadot village in Bweyale sub-county, Kiryandongo district on Gulu-Kampala highway.

According to eye witnesses, the bus belonging to Dokolo Coaches Transport Company rammed into the lorry at about 1:00am.

The eye witnesses said the driver was attempting to avoid a head-on collision with another bus but ended up ramming into the lorry.

Baptist Okello-Okello, the Dokolo district boss who owns the bus, was distraught when contacted.

“I am in shock; the accident happened last night and I am told five people died although the Police say only four died.”

Stella Babisusa, the Kiryandongo traffic Police officer, identified the dead as Aloysius Lubega, the driver, Christine Ayamo, a woman only identified as Apiyo and Okello Aduku.

She said the four died at Kiryandongo Hospital.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Those with minor injuries, however, got into another bus and continued their journey.

“This bus rammed into the lorry from behind as the driver tried to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle that was coming from the opposite direction.

It is unfortunate that the driver who would tell us exactly what happened also died,” Babisusa remarked.

She said the driver of the bus was trying to over-take the lorry when the accident occurred.

“The weather was so bad. But if it was not because of over-speeding, the accident would have been avoided,” the traffic officer noted.
