Nkangi quizzed over saga

THE Uganda Land Commission chief, Mayanja Nkangi, was on Tuesday interrogated by the Police over claims that the land Aya Group got on Nakasero Hill exceeded what the Government offered them.

THE Uganda Land Commission chief, Mayanja Nkangi, was on Tuesday interrogated by the Police over claims that the land Aya Group got on Nakasero Hill exceeded what the Government offered them.
Aya Group is constructing a Hotel atop Nakasero Hill in Kampala under the Hilton Franchise. The land initially belonged to the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
Nkangi appeared at the Special Investigation Unit head office in Kampala for interrogation.
A detective, who preferred anonymity, said they discussed issues concerning UBC land.
“We wanted to inquire whether he knew about the extra land the Aya Group is said to have acquired,†the source stated, without disclosing details.
However, the source said Nkangi did not record a statement. Normally, when someone is assisting the Police in investigations, they record statements.
Contacted for comment, Nkangi confirmed that he met with the detectives who told him they were investigating fraud.
He, however, said the claims were not true and advised investigators to contact city authorities for details.
Earlier, the Police had summoned Nkangi in vain. At one time, detectives wrote a letter seeking his assistance. Instead of meeting them, Nkangi edited the letter using a red pen and sent it back.
According to the document, Aya allegedly annexed more land after it got the initial portion of land.
Aya Group is currently constructing a hotel, which has a bird’s eye-view of the city. The Aya team could not be reached for a comment.
