TWO people from two major political parties were yesterday nominated to contest for Entebbe Municipality parliamentary seat.

Patience Mubangizi Tusiimire (NRM) and Mohammed Kawuma (DP) were nominated in the morning hours at Changsha Model Primary School, Entebbe in Wakiso district.

The two candidates were escorted by their supporters who were not allowed to access the school. Only five people from each camp accompanied them to the returning officer’s desk.

Three more people are expected to be nominated today, according to Sarah Bukirwa, the Wakiso district returning officer.

“Wilberforce Seryaazi from FDC, Haawa Nakibuule and Charles Kirumiira (both independents) are expected in the evening,” she added.

Bukirwa explained that six people had picked nomination forms but did not possess the required qualifications.

“Judith Matovu had brought her forms, claiming to be the DP candidate. The forms, however, had a signature of an unknown DP secretary general. EC only recognises Norbert Mao’s executive,” Bukirwa stated.

She said official campaigns would start on Tuesday next week and polling day will be on September 29.

“According to the law, any by-election is conducted within 60 days. Candidates are given 14 days for campaigns,”she said.

She noted that EC registered 54,551 voters in the municipality, adding that it was updating its data.

Speaking after nomination, Mubangizi promised to implement the NRM manifesto once she is elected.

Meanwhile, Kawuma was optimistic the election exercise would not have any loophole because EC had appointed a new team.

This exercise will confirm that I am the people’s choice. It was the commission that lost the case and I never appealed because I know DP has a lot of support in this constituency,” he emphasized.

The High Court in Kampala last month nullified the election of Muhammad Kawuma as Entebbe Municipality MP on grounds that the Electoral Commission (EC) did not comply with electoral laws.

In his judgement, Justice Andrew Bashaija said the omission of the vote tally from 12 out of 74 polling stations, affected the final result in a substantial manner. A total of 8,220 voters were registered in the 12 polling stations.
