Give candidates a chance to prepare for national exams

AS the dust over teachers’ demand for a pay rise begins to settle, it is time for schools to get back to work. This is third term, which is the busiest on the education calendar.

Unfortunately, it is in the same term that the impasse between teachers and the Government cropped up, causing unnecessary disruptions to the start of term.

However, teachers have resolved to go back to work. It is not too late for schools to settle and prepare especially candidate classes for national exams. Primary Leaving Exams (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams are around the corner.

Candidates in private schools were not affected by the strike; this puts them ahead of their counterparts in government schools in terms of preparation for national exams.

Candidates in government schools have lost their precious time. They need extra time and attention from teachers to catch up. Teachers handling candidate classes should put an extra effort to cover up for the lost time.

Headteachers could consider arranging special classes for candidate classes in order to compensate for the lost time. Since the Uganda National Teachers’ Union called off the strike, it should also make a follow up and ensure that teachers have gone back to class, not just to make a presence but to teach.

National exams are the yardstick of the candidates’ future. Failure in these exams may ruin a child’s future. Let us give the candidates a chance to settle and prepare for the national exams without un necessary inconveniences again. Candidates need to be prepared mentally and psychologically to have a positive attitude in the run up to exams.
