Kampala terror suspects turn into witnesses

TWO terror suspects who pleaded guilty to ochestrating the July 11, 2010 Kampala twin bombings, have been turned into state witnesses.

Muhamoud Mugisha and Edris Nsubuga were yesterday made state witnesses shortly after they were convicted of the charges of terrorism and conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism respectively.

The duo who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges on Tuesday at the High Court in Kampala, have been lined up by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to testify against the 12 other terror suspects.

The suspects are Hussein Hassan Agad, Idris Magondu, Isa Ahammed Luyima, Hassan Haruna Luyima, Abubakari Batematyo, Yahya Suleiman Mbuthia. Others are Habib Suleiman Njoroge, Omar Awadh Omar, Mohammad Hamid Sulaiman, Seleman Hijar Nyamandondo and Mohammad Ali Mohammad.



The trial is presided over Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo. Hearing is scheduled to start on November 15. However, the two convicts are scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow.

The lead prosecutor senior principal state attorney Joan Kagezi informed court that prosecution had decided to use the convicts as witnesses.

“We intend to use the two as witnesses of the state,” Kagezi said after the judge inquired whether the two would be used as witnesses.

Kagezi is jointly prosecuting the case with senior state attorney Lino Anguzu.

Also yesterday, Anguzu presented a withdrawal letter from the DPP, asking court to discontinue proceedings on 76 charges of murder and 10 of attempted murder against Nsubuga.

The defence lawyers are Caleb Alaka, Alex Bashasha, Duncan Ondimu, John Francis Onyango, Deogratious Odokel Opolot, and Madinah Kabagenyi.

A total of 76 people perished in the two incidents that occurred at Kyadondo Rugby Club and the Ethiopian Village Restaurant in Kampala. The third bomb, planted at the Makindye House on the same day, was defused before it exploded.
