The National Management Authority (NEMA) has threatened to close Kampala City Council Primary School over poor sanitation.

The move follows complaints from the community neighbouring the school over a blocked sewer line causing sewage to flow into the neighborhood.

In a report to NEMA, the concerned members of the community said they were at risk of contracting diseases.

The school has alternative flush toilets but the headteacher, Jane Kansiime, said they could not maintain using flush toilets because of water bills.

In a communication signed by Arnold Waiswa, a NEMA official, KCCA was directed by NEMA to handle the issue within one month.

Waiswa observed that the school was acting contrary to the NEMA (waste management) Regulations, the Public Health Act and Water Act.

The KCCA spokesperson, Peter Kaujju, said plans to construct toilets at the school were underway.
