The Busoga Kingdom, in partnernship with Kibo International, a Jinja-based non-governmental organisation, have embarked on the growing of Mvule trees which are facing extinction due to timber extraction and charcoal burning.

The massive campaign is aimed at reducing the effects of global warming and alleviating poverty in the region.

The campaign will involve distribution of tree seedlings, sensitisation of communities on the benefits of tree planting and the adverse effects of de-forestation.

Launching the campaign at Namayingo district headquarters on Friday, the Isabalangira (chief prince) of Busoga, Daudi Kawunhe Wakholi, who is also the acting Kyabazinga, urged residents to embrace the Mvule tree which he said produces quality timber.

Kawunhe disclosed that at least 11,500 Mvule trees had been planted at the district headquarters across the region, adding that their next target would be schools and health centres.

He noted that apart from their value for timber, the trees also act as wind-breakers and, therefore, save buildings from destruction during storms.
