Ssekandi in New York for UN meet

THE Vice-President, Edward Ssekandi, yesterday attended a high level meeting in New York, USA, ahead of an exercise to formerly recognise the National Transitional Council in Libya as the country’s legitimate leadership and representative at the UN.

THE Vice-President, Edward Ssekandi, yesterday attended a high level meeting in New York, USA, ahead of an exercise to formerly recognise the National Transitional Council in Libya as the country’s legitimate leadership and representative at the UN.
Ssekandi, who is representing President Yoweri Museveni, at the 66th annual UN General Assembly also led Uganda’s delegation.
In a press release from his office, the Vice-President, said Uganda welcomed the NTC in the UN family and called for peace and security in Libya, saying fighting was on-going in some parts of the country.
Ssekandi also noted that peace in Libya can only be achieved with support from the Libyans, and asked the transition government to be accommodative and inclusive so as to minimise further bloodshed.
The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, welcomed the former Libyan rebel leader, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, into the international family as the Libyan interim leader.
Last week, the 193 member states under the General Assembly voted to recognise the NTC as the legitimate Libyan representative at the world body.
Hours after the Assembly’s vote, the UN Security Council, unanimously adopted a resolution setting up a UN support mission in Libya to help the country organise national elections, draft a constitution and initiate economic recovery programmes.
The NTC was accepted by the majority of UN members, including all major powers in the world as the Libyan interim government in the war-torn country. The five permanent members on the Security Council are; Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The red, black and green Libyan flag was also hoisted at the UN headquarters replacing the all green colour flag.
The meeting was attended by U.S. president Barack Obama, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and South African’s Jacob Zuma.
Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the leader of the Libyan National Transitional Council, was also welcomed into the high-level UN meeting.
Ssekandi will on September 23, address the UN assembly on Uganda’s role in promoting peace and development in the region, the challenges and opportunities.
He is also expected to meet the UN Secretary General, Americas’ first family and other leaders.
Uganda’s delegation includes ministers: Sam Kutesa (foreign affairs), Dr. Christine Ondoa (health), Matia Kasaijja (state for finance) and Okello Oryem (international cooperation).
