THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is to conduct a study to establish the environmental impact of changing the land use of Mabira Forest reserve.
Dr. Tom Okurut, the NEMA executive director, said the environment body wants to gather more knowledge before making a final decision on Mabira.
“Existing knowledge shows that keeping Mabira as a forest reserve is better than converting part of it into a sugarcane plantation,†Okurut said.
He added that the study would provide more knowledge and complement the comprehensive study proposed by President Yoweri Museveni. Okurut was addressing journalists at NEMA House, Kampala ahead of a two-day conference on sustainable development to be held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
The meeting is part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Earth Summit that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992.
The outcome of the meeting will create a think tank on sustainable development issues. Okurut said the creation of NEMA and laws on the environment was undertaken after the Earth Summit.
He said the meeting would carry out Environment Impact Assessment studies to ensure a balance among economic development, social development and environment protection.
