THEyouth in northern Uganda, especially in Acholi sub-region have asked the Government to accord them special attention to enable them catch up with the rest of the country.

The youth made the appeal at the 30th United Nations global peace day held at Kaunda Ground, Gulu municipality on Wednesday.

Isaac Olara, a Senior Five student of Sir Samuel Baker Secondary School in Gulu, said despite the introduction of free primary and secondary education, many students in northern Uganda were unable to pay the high fees levied by the schools under the Parents Teachers Associations (PTA).

“We youth, especially in Acholi sub-region where the Lord’s Resistance Army concentrated its rebellion, still find it difficult to go to school, especially in higher institutions of learning because of poverty,” Olara said.

Olara appealed to the Government to increase youth representation in Parliament to raise the voice of the young generation.

The state minister for youth and children affairs, Ronald Kibuule, promised to return to Acholi and discuss government programmes with the youth.

The state minister for relief and disaster preparedness, Musa Ecweru, who represented Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, promised government support to the youth, especially if they are organised in groups.
