PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has held discussions with various Indian investors.
A statement from State House last night said the President met investors in agro-processing, health, energy, oil and mineral exploration, roads and bridge construction on the sidelines of his private visit to India.
The President, who was received by Uganda’s High Commissioner to India, Nimisha Madhvani, said for any country to develop economically, it needsland, labour, capital and entrepreneurship.
“In Uganda, we have land and labour which we need to exploit to develop, but we lack capital and entrepreneurship. We need to attract investors from India because they have capital,†he said.
The President, who also met the staff of Uganda’s High Commission in India, urged them to attract Indian investors due to their easy access to capital, technology and entrepreneurship.
He also urged them to promote Uganda’s tourism in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
India is the fifth largest economy in the world (ranking above France, Italy, the UK and Russia) and has the third largest GDP in Asia. It is also the second largest among emerging nations. The liberalisation of the economy in the 1990s has paved the way for a huge number entrepreneurs.
A recent Uganda Investment Authority report on investment performance in Uganda places India in the fourth position, with 64 planned projects estimated at $177m and expected to create 4, 942 jobs.
The President was accompanied by his wife, Janet, who is also the Minister for Karamoja Affairs.
