A 34-year old woman in Pallisa district has successfully given birth to quadruplets by Caesarean operation, but one of the babies died a few moments after birth.

Agnes Soigo, a wife to Wilson Auk, hails from Ocaca village in Olok sub-county in the eastern Uganda district.

Dr. John Angiro, who led the operation, reported that Soigo had, moments before the operation, experienced extra labour pains which required last minute scanning.

The scanner at the district hospital got a technical fault about ten months ago. This forced Dr. Angiro to rush his patient, Soigo, to Odulawuno Medical Centre, along Pallisa-Kumi road for the scan.

After the scan was taken, the doctor discovered that Soigo was heavy with quadruplets, but one of them was over-squeezed by the other three. She was immediately rushed to the theatre for a Caesarean operation, which lasted one and a half hours.

However, one of the babies died after birth. Doctors say the baby died from too much squeezing from the other three inside the womb.

At the time of birth, the first two, who were girls, weighed 1.4kg. They were followed by a boy, who weighed 1kg, then the last one (girl) who died after the operation.

Coming from a peasant family, Soigo is the breadwinner, as her husband, Auk is an ‘irresponsible drunkard.’ She however thanked God for enabling her to give birth to the babies.

She earns a living by selling tomatoes at a trading centre in the area, but whose gains are not adequate to meet the needs of her family. Soigo says her four other children survive on one meal a day.

Amid her plight, Soigo lacks baby clothes and other necessities like towels, nappies, jelly, baby powder for her newly-born.
She calls upon wellwishers to come to her rescue.

The Coordinator Pallisa Civil Societies Organisations’ Network (PACONET), Wilberforce Makeri has pledged assistance towards her family.
