A five-month-old baby boy was among 13 survivors in a motor accident that claimed six people at Kazinga Namanve along the Kampala-Jinja highway.

His unconscious mother, Erina Mutesi and nine others remain admitted at Mulago Hospital.
The baby was saved by a bodaboda rider who took him to Harpet Medical Centre in Kazinga Bweyogerere.

Doctors at the clinic appealed to relatives to pick the baby after the Police recovered his photograph in the mother’s bag.
Two people died instantly after a speeding trailer rammed into a commuter taxi. Godfrey Mwesigye, the officer in charge of traffic in Kira division, said the tragedy occurred at 7:00am yesterday morning.

He said the trailer driver lost control and hit the taxi that was heading to Kampala. The truck pushed the taxi off the road before burying it in a trench, leaving most of the passengers’ limbs chopped off.

Mwesigye identified the dead as Isha Nanyonjo and Apofia Kasiko, 56, who died on the spot. The other two, who had no identification papers, died on the way to Mulago.

Sam Senfuka, the taxi driver and another unidentified man died at Mulago hospital in the afternoon, bringing the number of the dead to six.

“This was a result of overloading, speeding and careless driving that led the driver of the trailer to lose control,” Mwesigye said.

Suleiman Katumba, an eyewitness,  said the trailer failed to brake and hit the taxi at the back, forcing it to overturn. He said the truck driver took off after the incident.

The Police, with support from the area residents, had to shred the taxi to pull out the bodies and the injured.
The trailer was towed to Naguru Police Station. Residents said the truck was still full of creates of beer, which were destined for Jinja.

Mulago hospital listed the injured as Erina Mutesi, 27, Feder Bukare, Vincent Wambi, 40, Sula Sumanya, Mugwa Ssejjambu, Rodgers Buyondo (conductor), Pieria Maseruka, Baker Kiwanuka, Ofumbi and Simon Mulungani.
Robert Nsubuga and  Martin Kyeyune were discharged.
