JINJA Golf Club members are poised to keep a four-year perfect home record following a strong showing in both amateur and professional categories of the Kakira Open in Jinja on Saturday.
Ronald Ssenyanja, the only big name in Jinja yet to win a major event, shot one over par 73 to take a one shot lead over Entebbe Willy Katatta.
The 28-year-old dreadlocked Ssenyanja who got off to a shaky start having bogeyed holes one and six made amends with birdies on the seventh and 13th to finish the day atop the leader-board.
“Kitatta has had a good day as well. It’s going to be tough in the final round. My best position here was third in the Onito Memorial last year. I look forward to breaking the home jinx,” Ssenyanja told New Vision.
Jinja’s Abbey Bagalana tied with Toro Club’s Adolf Muhumuza in third spot—three strokes off the pace. Jinja’s Robert Tumusiime was fifth on 77 while Fort Portal’s Lawrence Muhenda and Titus Okwong shared sixth position a further one shot down the leader-board.
In the professionals’ event Jinja’s Ian Odokonyero was shot 70 to lead Kenyan David Odhiambo by a stroke.
Fred Wanzala and Denis Anguyo and Brian Toolit who nurtured on the same course were third and tied in fourth respectively.
The last tournament on the Uganda Golf Union calendar ends on Sunday.
