KAYUNGA—The efforts of a student to save his mate ended in tragedy with the two lads drowning in the River Nile near Kalagala Falls in Kayunga district.

Sempira Haruna, 21 and Godfrey Kaddu, 24, both students of Ahmed Seguya Technical Institute, are said to have escaped from school, headed out to the falls for a swim, where they later met their fate Sunday evening.

Police in the district is working with residents of Kalagala village, Kangulumila sub-county to retrieve the two bodies.

“The strong current in the river section overpowered Kaddu as he tried to save Haruna from drowning,” Lameck Kigozi, the Central Region police spokesperson said Monday morning.

He warned the residents of the area to stay away from the dangerous falls.

“We are warning students and also parents in this area to avoid this section of the River Nile to prevent further deaths,” cautioned Kigozi at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

The deceased were first year students in the plumbing department.

A few weeks back, three students in the same area drowned under similar circumstances. After being expelled from school, the students reportedly went to swim in the river, where they later drowned. Their bodies were never found.

Earlier this year in March, Sarah Ndibulya, a resident of Kalagala Village, threw her three children in the same section of the river, reportedly out of anger that her husband had neglected his family responsibilities. One body was found but the other two have since then been missing.
