THE year 2010 was not just ground-breaking for Maurice Kirya, it was tremendous. He won the RFI Discoveries Award, and went down in the record books as the first Anglophone to take the accolade in its 27-year-old history.

And thanks to the money that came with the award, he performed in the rest of Africa, Europe and the US, ending up in separate interviews with media powerhouses like CNN and Radio France.

But while performing all over the world, he got a little tired and probably homesick. So, he decided to just have fun. He returned home and today (Friday) promises to close the tour that has kept him off. So, we finally join the experience of the rest of the world as Kirya performs at Serena Hotel’s Conference Hall this evening.

It was his Misubbaawa (candles) song that gave him the push to the peak, and now he admits that : “It has come to the time when I have to blow out that candle so I can move on.” He is so upbeat about it and can give him the wrong impression that he may perhaps have lost his soulfulness.

He has been dubbed as an R&B artiste and a world musician. He stubbornly says his music is best described by the word mwoyo, which means soul. His is a fusion of various genres and at his most daring, he does blues and contemporary jazz.

There are quite many factors that promise to make the show an unforgettable one. The show has no sponsors; meaning that you do not have to sit through unmusical speeches by marketers and the sponsors jingles are not going to interrupt the flow of the show. Secondly, the show comes at the end of a successful tour.

This artiste just wants to have fun (he called it kicking a**) and that will go a long way in driving the mood of the audience.
