FISH traders around Lake Kyoga are counting their losses after officials from Nakasongola district fisheries department confiscated over three tonnes of immature fish and distributed it to Nakasongola residents on Friday.

The immature fish, which was impounded during a recent joint operation with local volunteers, included fresh, smoked and salted fish locally known as Bambara. The Bambara is mainly sold in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The assistant district fisheries officer, Bosco Twesigye, said the operation was part of efforts to stop illegal fishing methods in the central Uganda lake.

There was a scuffle as over 300 residents, scrambled for the fish, which was transported in two trucks.

Some of the strong residents got full sacks of the fish, which was distributed at the district headquarters in Nakasongola.

After the distribution, the district authorities set ablaze 600 undersize nets which were impounded from Ttumba, Kansiira, Kamuli and Kikalaganya landing sites in Lwampanga sub-county.

Twesigye said the Police were still hunting for the culprits who fled during the operation.

He said over 200 fishermen had been arrested and prosecuted over illegal fishing methods since the year started.
