Former Katikkiro Ssemwogerere honored

Former Katikkiro Joseph Mulwanyammuli Ssemwogerere and the late Rev.Polycap Kakooza have received “ Ekitiibwa kya Buganda” awards in recognition of their distinguished service to the Buganda kingdom.

Former Katikkiro Joseph Mulwanyammuli Ssemwogerere and the late Rev.Polycap Kakooza have received “ Ekitiibwa kya Buganda” awards in recognition of their distinguished service to the Buganda kingdom.

The awards in form of plaques were given at the Ttabamiruka 2011, an annual conference for Baganda in America and Canada; which was recently held at Marriott Hotel in Chicago.

Over sh12m was raised by the 320 participants towards the re-construction of the Kasubi tombs which were burnt on March 16, 2010.

Ssemwogerere who is in USA for an optical operation never attended the eighth Ttabamiruka and his award was handed over to Dr. Paschal Mawanda Kibuule who also conveyed Ssemwopgerere’s speech.

Kakooza composed the Buganda Anthem –‘ Ekitiibwa kya Buganda’ in 1939. He was a clergy, an educationist, a sportsman, a musician and an ardent monarchist who died in January 2003. Kaooza’s award was received by his children in the USA.

In his acceptance speech, Ssemwogerere said he was humbled by the award because “often people look at the negatives in a person other than the positives.”

“Although I was the managing Director of Ssembule Investment Bank and I had been offered a job in the United Nations I opted to serving Buganda kingdom and I have no regrets for the 12 years I was the Katikkiro.”

He stressed the importance of recognizing people when they are still alive. He said the award would attract many people especially the youth to serving the kingdom with the hope of being appreciated rather than being abused.

Ssemwogerere is the Patron of Ssuubi 2011, an opposition pressure group, which campaigned for retired Col. Kizza Besigye in the general elections.

Ssemwogerere said he owed the award to Kabaka Ronald Mutebi who appointed him to the second highest post in the kingdom as the Katikkiro, He also appreciated those who cooperated with him during his tenure of office.

Abdulaziz Wasswa Ddamulira, who is the Kabaka’s representative in the Midwest, USA described Ssemwogerere as a trusted servant who helped the Kabaka to set up Mengo establishment starting from scratches.’

He hailed Ssemwogerere for initiating several developmental projects like the central Broadcasting service, helped in the return of some of the kingdom assets, and for successfully organizing Kabaka’s wedding.

Apollo Makubuya, the kingdom’s Attorney general represented the Kabaka at the three day conference from September 2 to 5th.

It was resolved that Mengo establishes a Volunteers’ group similar to Peace Corps in the US ; where members in the Diaspora could share their expertise with the locals whenever they come to Uganda.

They pledged totals Support to kingdom’s developmental programmes and to support the re construction of the Kasubi tombs.
