IT is barely four years since royalty visited Ugandan soil, with Queen Elizabeth II of England gracing the Heads of Government Meeting in 2007. Once again, we are honoured by another uncommon visit. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is expected in the country.

The Prince, described in British media as popular owing to his charm, is here to celebrate six years of Helping Hands, a Christian charity funded by the UK, and helping disadvantaged children in Uganda to combat diseases such as malaria.

Edward Anthony Richard Louis is the third son and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; born at Buckingham Palace in 1964 and christened the same year. He was third in the line of succession to the throne. But after his two elder brothers gave birth to two children each, Prince Edward is now seventh in line. He was educated at Heatherdown Preparatory School, Ascot and went on to Gordonstoun School in Scotland, where he was head boy in his last term.

He attended Jesus College, University of Cambridge and graduated in 1986 with a degree in history. On leaving Cambridge, he joined the Royal Marines, but did not take to the army life. He resigned his army commission in 1987 and joined Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Really Useful theatrical company. In 1993 he formed the Ardent Television company and was involved in documentaries about the Royal Family, but in 2002 stepped down to concentrate on his royal duties in support of the Queen.

He married Sophie Rhys-Jones, his girlfriend of six years, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 19 June 1999. At their wedding Edward was made Earl of Wessex and Sophie became Countess of Wessex. They have two children; Lady Louise Windsor and James Viscount Severn.

Edward has taken over several of his father’s the public roles, including President of the Commonwealth games and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme founded by his father Prince Philip. It is believed that Prince Edward will eventually inherit the title Duke of Edinburgh.

In love relationships, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex has been described as steadfast, loyal, friendly, sensual in nature and a wonderful lover, who is very attentive to the comfort and enjoyment of his loved one.
