CAF clears all Cranes stars for Kenya tie

IF the events that have unfolded within the Cranes camp in the last one week are meant to indicate anything, it’s that the odds are already swinging in favour of Uganda.

Just days after defender Hassan Wasswa was set free of his case regarding drug possession and declared legible for competitive football, soccer governing body CAF followed through with even better news.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) yesterday ended all lingering doubts over Uganda’s player suspension situation with confirmation that none of Cranes players is suspended for the make-or-break Nations Cup qualifier against Kenya.

“The Federation (FUFA) has received confirmation from CAF indicating no suspensions in the Cranes camp. The development now makes all our players legible to feature against Harambee Stars on October 8 in Namboole depending on their individual fitness levels and the coach’s choice,” FUFA spokesman Rogers Mulindwa disclosed yesterday.

The development is certainly timely given that by Saturday, FUFA were operating in a world of speculation over the card situations of defenders Andrew Mwesigwa, Nestroy Kizito, Godfrey Walusimbi and midfielder Mudde Musa.

“I don’t know whether it’s me suspended or Walusimbi because there was a moment in the game against Bissau when a yellow was flashed but I don’t know to who in particular it was directed,” Kizito hinted last month.

FUFA forthwith wrote to CAF over the suspensions and as it is Walusimbi, Simeon Masaba, Geoffrey Massa, Joseph Kabagambe, Mwesigwa, Tony Mawejje, Nestroy Kizito and Mike Sserumagga have a card each and are thus legible for the forthcoming fixture.

Strong squad
What this means is that with less than a fortnight before Cranes confront Kenya, Cranes coach Bobby Williamson finds himself with a crisis any coach would rather have than not –an embarrassment of options within the team.

Mike Sserumagga returns to add quality and balance to the side since his last appearance in the 3-0 win over Angola in June last year.

Bobby, whose side regroups today, will also feel privileged that all his foreign-based players are involved a lot more at their respective clubs. Andrew Mwesigwa helped Ordabasy preserve a clean sheet in their 0-0 draw against Irtysh, while David Obua played for 65 minutes in Hearts’ 2-0 loss to St Johnstone.
