Retired Major General Kasirye Ggwanga is recovering steadily after a major operation. He was operated at Nakasero Hospital on Tuesday (May 19) after the doctors discovered a blood clot in one of the vessels in his head.

According to Kasirye's relative who preferred anonymity, the Rtd. Major General is still at Nakasero Hospital, where he is being monitored strictly by the doctors.

"The operation was done successfully but his condition is not yet good. The doctors haven't allowed him to talk to people. They are monitoring him very strictly. We are praying with hope that he recovers," the relative said.

Kasirye was admitted to Nakasero Hospital on Monday (May 18), where he was referred to by the doctors at Mbuya Military Barracks, where he had previously been taken for treatment.

He first felt unwell last month and was taken to Mbuya Military Barracks where he received initial treatment. The Army Spokesman Brigadier Richard Karemire confirmed Kasirye's illness on April 7, when he told the public that the no-nonsense soldier was being given medical care at Mbuya Military Hospital Senior Officers Diagnostic Centre.

Kasirye had earlier (in 2016) suffered lung-related complications and was admitted at IHK (Namuwongo).

A brief on Kasirye

Retired Maj. General Kasirye Ggwanga, 68, is the Special Presidential Advisor on security in Buganda region.

He joined the army in 1972 during Idi Amin Dada's regime. He retired officially in 2018 after a 46-year-long military career. He was Chairman of Mubende District from 2001 to 2006. The district then covered greater Mityana.

He was born at Katakala in Mityana district. By the time he fell sick, he had launched a campaign to save forests in central Uganda. He would not allow anybody to cut trees from forests in the region. He would shoot at the tyres of the Lorries that he would see carrying logs. He had stationed himself at Nkene village, Maanyi Sub-county, where he has a farm.

Last month Kasirye Ggwanga mounted controversial operations, targeting people who he said were defying the presidential guidelines on COVID-19. Many people accuse him of clobbering people in Mityana during the operations.
