Dr Byanyima appointed Mulago deputy executive director

A consultant radiologist, Byanyima, replaces Dr Doreen Birabwa-Male who retired in November 2019.

 

Dr Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima, has been appointed the substantive deputy executive director of Mulago National Referral Hospital after about six months in acting capacity.

According to a May 6 letter, addressed to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Public Service, President Museveni appointed Byanyima with effect from the date of assumption of duty.

The letter seen by New Vision, and signed by Dr Mary Theopista Wenene, the permanent secretary of the Health Service Commission, is copied to the head of public service and secretary to the cabinet, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health and the executive director, Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Byanyima brings a wealth of experience in management having served as the Mulago hospital clinical head of the diagnostics for nine years between 2009 and 2018.

She was also head of radiology department at the same facility from 2008 to 2009.

Byanyima has an executive master's degree in business administration from Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) which gives her a niche in management.

Bynayima has been a health worker for 29 years, with 27 spent at Mulago.

Speaking to New Vision, Byanyima said she is happy for the trust put in her and promises continued service above self.

"I'm happy about the appointment and ready to continue serving as I have always done," Byanyima says.

"I have been a middle level manager and very familiar of what is going on at Mulago so I will easily get along with my team which I have worked with for a long time," she says.

As a deputy executive director, Byanyima is charged with clinical works of the hospital; responsible to make sure theaters are working, drugs ara available, patients are getting the care they deserve among others.

She is involved in the patient care as her biggest task.

Byanyima will also be heading all senior consultants at Mulago on top of executing the duties of the executive director.

During her acting capacity, Byanyima is credited for leading a great team at Mulago that is at the forefront of the fighting against coronavirus.

Mulago managed to treat all 23 patients who had admitted with COVID-19. The last patients were discharged in April.

Recently, Dr Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary at the ministry of health, described Byanyima and her team as warriors who are sacrificing their lives.

"She is a senior officer who has the profession at heart and I believe she has a warrior's heart to face this virus face to face," Atwine said.

Dr Fred Nakwagala, the Clinical Head of the Directorate of Medicine at Mulago hospital, termed Byanyima's appointment as exciting news.

"It is exciting news because she deserves it. She has a lot of experience and all the qualifications. In her you can see a person who loves accountability and paying attention to details," Nakwagala said.

"Her appointment means there is continuity of her good her work so far done.  It will not be difficult for people at Mulago to get along with her. Byanyima is a team player and loves building teams."

About Byanyima

Byanyima was born in Ibanda district to Joseph Byanyima and Constance Byanyima (RIP).

She attended Immaculate Heart Nyakibale Secondary School for O level and Trinity College Nabbingo for A' level.

In 1991, Byanyima graduated from Makerere University with a first degree in Medicine. She also has a master's degree in Radiology.

She has an Executive master's degree in business administration from ESAMI.
