Tennis star Aguma saddened by the postponement of competitions

Tennis star Borris Aguma is saddened by the postponement of different tennis competitions by the world body International Tennis Federation (ITF) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aguma was supposed to take part in the Davis Cup and ITF Futures among other competitions.

"I have been training at a personal level with the hope that these competitions will be played. I had invested in a lot of my time and resources to make sure I reach the level I want to be. With this lockdown, I feel demoralised but because of the need to keep safe and alive, I will continue to do some training away from the public, though Aguma, I miss the courts. Being healthy is important," stated Aguma.

Aguma together with David Oringa, Simon Ayella, and Frank Tayebwa were supposed to represent the country in the Davis Cup starting on June 8 in Congo.

According to ITF president David Haggerty, the suspension and cancellation of the events was due to the danger posed by COVID-19 worldwide.

"Protecting the health and well-being of all those involved in tennis as well as the wider public has been and remains our priority. We recognise the significant impact these decisions will have across the sport and do not take them lightly, however, we must continue to be guided by experts and evidence. Our sport is in uncharted territory, but we are committed to taking a proactive and responsible approach to meet the challenges we are facing," Haggerty stated.

Just like the men, the women's team was also supposed to take part in the Fed Cup in Lithuania but this pandemic has affected their dream.

Sandra Nhissa, Mariam Etiang, Judith Nalukwago, Jovia Nakayenga, Evelyn Ochom, Evelyn Chimolo, Melonie Nahirya, Maggie Namaganda, Winnie Birungi and Patience Athieno who were preparing to represent Uganda.

 Uganda was to feature alongside countries like Alge-ria, Albania, Gabon, Ghana, Ireland,  South Africa, Mauritius, Montenegro, Madagascar, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.
