Food prices remain stable amid COVID-19 lockdown

At Nateete Market, a full bunch of matooke starts from sh8,000 to about sh17,000

Traders in different markets heeded to President Yoweri Museveni's warning against hiking food prices.

On Saturday New Vision visited different markets around Kampala, including Nakasero, Kibuye, Nalukolongo, Busega, and Abayita Ababiri.

According to the manager of Kibuye Market, Justine Namisango, a bunch of Matooke sells for between sh8,000-15,000 depending on the size.

A cluster (myera) goes for between sh1,000-2,000. Tomatoes are going for between sh200 to 500 each, while a tin is going for sh6,000.

A cluster of potatoes is going for sh1,000. Seven passion fruits are being sold at sh1,000. A cup of fresh beans is going at sh2,500, cabbages are going for sh700-2000 while a pumpkin is going for sh2,000-3000.

"We take the President's directive very seriously, nobody can enter this market without washing his/her hands twice, and also our vendors are spaced well to avoid spreading the virus," Namisango said.  

However, at Nalukolongo Market a bunch of matooke is going for sh10,000-15,000, while clusters are going for between sh1,000-2,000.

Sweet potatoes start at sh1,000 and g up to sh2,000 depending on size, while Irish potatoes go for sh1000. A kilogram of meat is being sold at sh13,000.

According to the chairman of Nateete Market, Bonny Kabugo, a full bunch of matooke starts from sh8,000 to about sh17,000. Vegetables are being sold for sh500 while oranges are being sold at sh1,000.       

Kabugo said a full sack of Irish potatoes from Kisoro is being sold at sh190,000 while those from Ssingo are going for sh300,000.

At Busega Market, a bunch of matooke is going for between sh10,000 and sh13,000. Pineapple are going for between sh1,000 and sh2,000, a cup of fresh beans for sh2,000 and a cup of fresh peas at sh2,500.

At Abayita Ababiri, a bunch of matooke is going for between sh13,000 and sh20,000, potatoes for sh2,000, Irish potatoes for sh2,000.
