Health ministry gets sh63m boost to fight COVID-19

KAMPALA - The Ministry of Health has received protective equipment's worth sh63m from the Indian Association of Uganda to support in the treatment of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The items were handed over to Dr Ruth Aceng, the Minister of Health on Thursday by the Indian Association Chairman Mohan Rao, Mohamed Vaheed the association general secretary, Sanjeev Goel the Indian High commissioner at the ministry headquarters in Kampala.

Mohamed Vaheed, the general secretary for Indian association said that the items are part of the immediate measure aimed at ensuring that COVID-19 does not spread in Uganda.

According to Vaheed, the donation included 500 sets of personnel protective equipment's of which each contains an overall suite, glass, gloves and mouse together with sanitizers, gloves, liquid soap and washing powder.

Vaheed urged all Indian owned companies to donate directly to the task force. He revealed that some companies have already donated health materials worth sh80million and also 100 tonnes of sugar and 2.5- tonnes of wheat flour

Besides supporting MOH, Vaheed said the association has also donated hand sanitizers, tanks and liquid soap, masks and gloves to all police stations in Kampala. 

Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minister for Health express her gratitude to the association for giving a hand in fighting COVID-19 promising that all the items will be sent to the respective facilities where they are to be used.

"We really appreciate you for coming in this difficult time where we are joining hands to fight against COVID19 in Uganda," Aceng said

Around half of the planet's population is under some form of lockdown as governments struggle to halt the spread of a disease that has now infected more than 1,034,116 people while over 54,465 are known to have died according to a Johns Hopkins University tally

As of today, Uganda has no new confirmed case of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) though a total number of 45 people are affected with 1015 under follow up and institutional quarantine. 

A total of 660contacts to the confirmed cases are also under follow up.

Sanjeev Goel the Indian High commissioner to Uganda said they are ready to support the government of Uganda in the fighting against COVID-19.

He advised the Indians living in Uganda and the Ugandan community at large to work together in order to defeat COVID-19.
