Kasirye Ggwanga condemns Tumukunde arrest

“When you arrest a general like that you are embarrassing fellow generals and the entire army,” Maj Gen (rtd) Kasirye Ggwanga said on Sunday morning.

KAMPALA - "You cannot arrest a military general like a dog." These were the words of Maj Gen (rtd) Kasirye Ggwanga as he described the recent arrest of Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde.

In an interview with New Vision, Ggwanga was, however, quick to blame Tumukunde for what he called "reckless talk".

He said it was not easy for someone to attain the rank of a general and, therefore, any move against them should be respectful.

"When you arrest a general like that you are embarrassing fellow generals and the entire army," Ggwanga added Sunday morning.

Tumukunde was arrested on Thursday night by a combined team of military and police officers at his office in Kololo. He was later charged with treason.

The Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, earlier said the arrest followed Tumukunde utterances in a series of radio and television interviews, which seek to foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence, fomenting and glorifying violence in general.

It is alleged that in addition, Tumukunde called on the support of a neighbouring country to support him in removing the current leadership with or without the ballot.

He was, therefore, charged under Sections 23 (2) b and 23 (3) b, of the Penal code Act, which deals with instigating persons to invade the Republic of Uganda and inciting any persons to make a mutinous assembly.

Enanga emphasized the number one priority of Police, which he said was the safety and security of all Ugandans.
