Rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka has petitioned the Federation of  Motorsport Clubs (FMU) deputy vice-president in charge of rallying Jeff Kabagambe requesting to be declared the winner of the Mbarara rally.

Lwakataka navigated by Paul Musaazi in Subaru N12 dropped out of the event on day two following an accident, while trying to save a fan who had driven into the section.

According to the petition seen by New Vision, Lwakataka argues that safety was neglected by Mbarara Motorsport Club the organisers of the event because there was no road entering the stages that were closed as per the competition regulations.

"There was also no evidence of a safety car, car number zero, yet is a must before the start of any stage. All we need is a fair hearing so that we can be awarded our points as winners of the event," Lwakataka said

FMU assistant secretary, Earnest Ziwa confirmed receiving the petition, but that the relevant committee will seat and take a decision.

However, Lwakataka has faced criticism from fellow drivers who are wondering why he did not lodge a petition immediately after the event.

"He is not being honest. If he did not see the Car No. zero, why did he start and besides that should everyone who goes off the road when he meets a cow or pig in the route ask for points," a driver asked.

Meanwhile, 48 crews have confirmed participation in the International University of East Africa (IUEA) Jinja Rally on Saturday and Sunday in Jinja.

The two-day event that is the second round of the NRC will start on Saturday with two stages in the morning before heading for the super special stage in the afternoon at Kakindu Stadium.

The event supported by IUEA, Coca-Cola, Marine Time Cargo, and Muttico Technical services has attracted 48crews.
