MBARARA -Three people were remanded to Kyamugorani prison after they were charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.

They include Pius Baingana Chairman Kakika court, Africa Godwin Chairman LCI Kibingo cell in Kakika division and Moses Kakuru, all residents of Mbarara Municipality.

Court heard that between January and February, the trio and others still at large hatched a ploy that aimed at killing Benon Mugume, the NRM Chairperson for Kakika division, Mbarara Municipality.

They were arrested on February 21, after the phone recording of trio's conversation revealed how they were plotting to kill Mugume.

After their arrest, their relatives and friends stormed Rwizi region police station demanding their release in vain.

While appearing before Grade One Magistrate Gordon Muhimbise for the mention of their case on February 25, the trio denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution told the court that investigations into the matter were complete and were ready to proceed.

The lawyers of the accused represented by Allan Musasirane attempted to apply for bail for his clients. However, Muhimbise noted that despite this case being a bailable one and getting bail is the accused's constitutional right, due to the tight schedule he had that afternoon, he couldn't hear their application and remanded them to prison till March 10, for bail application.

Benon Mugume told the New Vision that the same group has been trailing to kill him for the past seven years and that this recent one has been their third attempt.
