KAMPALA - The French ambassador to Uganda has rallied teachers to sensitize learners on what they can do to protect the environment, as the effects of global warming continue to be felt.

Ambassador Jules-Amand Aniambossou made the remarks on Wednesday during his courtesy visit to Umoja International French School.

The school, located at Mukono Industrial Area in Mukono Municipality was holding a climate change and environment protection campaign.

The function was attended by international students from Uganda Christian University, Cavendish University and the International University of East Africa.

The students made presentations faulting the old generation for being selfish for taking part in activities that have negatively impacted on the environment.

They cited industrialization as one of the factors that have led to the destruction of the wetlands, adding that factories are being built in wetlands on a daily basis as the leaders look on.

Deforestation is another factor that leaner highlighted as the cause of climate change. They noted that people cut down trees for timber, charcoal, firewood, and poles.

Aniambossou appreciated the efforts by the youth in the fight against environmental degradation. He recognized, in particular, Vanessa Nakate, a young Ugandan woman who is committed to the fight against climate change.

"It is this inspiring youth who will fight for our rights in the future. Raising awareness among the youngest is, in my opinion, the key to this success."

He added: "This is how we are going to take part, all together, in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony to testify to the importance of environmental protection for each of us."

The mayor of Mukono, George Fred Kagimu also highlighted the need to have everyone take part in the fight against climate change. He said this will be a successful operation because it is championed by the young generation.
