The defending champions were presented the perfect opportunity to move to within breathing distance of leaders Vipers after the table toppers slipped up against URA on Friday, but Mike Mutebi's lads squandered the chance to reduce the gap to two points.

The hosts, playing a man less after Musa Ramathan was sent off for handling the ball in the box at the end of the break, had to settle for a point and close the gulf between them and the Venoms to four points.

Mustafa Kizza had put KCCA in front from the spot in the 28th minute after Sadat Anaku was bundled in the area by Isa Lumu. But his goal was cancelled out by Frank Kalanda, also from the penalty spot, following Ramathan's blunder.

The KCCA defender was reduced to tears when he was given the marching orders a minute before half time, leaving his side to see out the remaining 45 minutes with a deficit in personnel.

It was more misery for KCCA as first-choice goalkeeper Charles Lukwago had to be stretchered off the pitch after picking up an injury during that moment of madness.

The result means KCCA (46), in second place, are still within touching distance of Vipers (50).
