Rugby Cranes 7s team lived up to its promise and beat Italy and Uruguay to advance to the knock out stages of the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series today in Chile.

Uganda will now face hosts Chile in the quarterfinals of the two-day 16 team tournament.

“We lost the battle, but not the war. Our target is to qualify for the HongKong 7s and we are going to approach this game as a final because we want a win,” team manager Michael Wandera said.

Uganda needs to finish the two challenger series in the top eight to qualify for the HSBC HongKong 7s that was pushed to October from April because of the deadly coronavirus.

Uganda's squad in the 7s includes Michael Wokorach (Cpt), Levis Ocen, Isaac Massa, Philip Wokorach, Pius Ogena, Desire Ayera, Ian Munyani, Adrian Kasito, Solomon Okia, Aaron Ofwoyrwoth, Norbert Okeny and William Nkore.

Other countries in the tournament are Brazil, Chile, Germany, HongKong, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Tonga, Uruguay, Zimbabwe, Mexico and Paraguay for the top eight positions to qualify for HongKong 7s.
