KAMPALA - Every year the Uganda Registration Services Bureau(URSB) marks February 14 as a special day for couples to legalise their marriages.

On Friday, the deputy register URSB, Jacinta Nabawanuka joined 11 couples in marriage.

Every couple was given a hamper that contained a bottle of wine, grapes, apples, and cake as a way of celebrating Valentine's Day.

Among the couples that solemnized their relationships on Valentine's Day was Edward Nicki and Jacinta Nabawanuka.

"It was love at first sight, "Nabawanuka said adding: "I fell in love with Edward the first time I saw him staring at me. He eventually gathered courage, approached me and complimented my looks. That was his first move."

Nabawanuka said they opted to wed on Valentine's Day because February 14 is a special day to celebrate in style. "We have been in a long-distance relationship, so we decided to celebrate this year's Valentine's Day as a lawfully wedded couple, she said.

For William Sunlipeng and Joan Mary Nabukeera, another couple that tied the knot today opted for civil marriage because they couldn't wed in church.

"We couldn't marry in the church because we come from different religious backgrounds," Nabukera said.

Nabukeera added that she met William through his mother.  " I used to work with his mother at a factory where I used worked and we dated for two years."

Leni Rea and Rehema Nakate who met in Dubai also wedded today

" Wedding on Valentine's Day was my husband's wish so I couldn't say no. Besides it is a day when everyone gets to celebrate love," Nakate said.
