Motocross breakaway is 'for the good of the sport'

KAMPALA - The organisers of the inaugural Motorcycling Association of Uganda Motocross Challenge on Sunday have urged the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) management committee to bless them instead of fighting them.

National motocross team captain Maxime Van Pee and parents of riders made the appeal on Monday at the launch of the event in Kampala. 

"We have taken this step for the good of motocross and our appeal is that FMU blesses our independence," said Van Pee. 

"For the years I have been in this sport, I think FMU can do better with rallying alone."

The national team captain said riders are being prepared for the FIM Africa All Nations Championship due in August in Luweero district.

It is believed that motocross in Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya is thriving because the sport is managed independently. 

Van Pee's sentiments voice were echoed by rider George Juncture Sserugunda. He said the grievances of riders can only be solved by motocross operating independently from rallying and FMU.

Meanwhile veteran motocross rider Wycliffe Bukenya is among the latest 12 riders who have joined Motorcycling Association of Uganda for the Sunday event.
