'Uncle Money' has a case to answer - Court

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court in Kampala has ruled that the prominent Cranes cheerleader, Jackson Sewanyana alias ‘Uncle Money' accused of manslaughter has a case to answer.

Sewanyana, also the Express FC principal cheer-leader and the vice-chairperson of local council one Kasubi Zone IV, Rubaga division in Kampala district and Benson Senyonga are battling a charge of manslaughter.

The offence contravenes sections 187 (1) and 190 of the Penal Code Act and calls for a maximum penalty of life imprisonment upon conviction.

Chief Magistrate, Miriam Ayo Okello on Thursday ruled that Sewanyana and his co-accused, Senyonga, have to defend themselves against the whelming evidence adduced by the eight prosecution witnesses.

"After listening to the evidence adduced by the eight prosecution witnesses, it clearly indicates that a prima facie case is proved against the accused, who should put in there defence," Ayo ruled.


She further tasked there lawyer, Ronald Kizito, to explain to his clients how they will defend themselves against the charges.

"The defence lawyer should explain and prepare the accused on how they will defend themselves," said Ayo as she adjourned the case to March 6, 2020.

Among the witnesses arraigned, was a senior police officer, D/Sgt Ronald Okallo, who told court that the duo beat Siraji Tumusiime Akim to death.

During Okallo's testimony, it was established that the accused tied the deceased's hands to his legs, beat and brutally kicked him into unconsciousness which later led to his death.

It is alleged that Sewanyana, Senyonga and three others on run took the deceased near a sweet potato garden while caning him, accusing him of stealing a phone.

"They beat him to coma, than brought and dumped him to Namungoona police station, in a state where he could not talk, with clothes torn and bloody. This, is where Tumusiime died," the witness told the court.

Prosecution led by Timothy Amerit, alleges that Sewanyana, Senyonga and others still, during the night of August 16, 2019, at Kasubi Zone IV in Kampala district, unlawfully caused the death of Siraji Tumusiime Akim, an act contrary to sections 187 (1) and 190 of the Penal Code Act.
