Uganda Handball Federation names 28-man squad

According to Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) assistant secretary Augustin Mugalu, the team will camp in Ndejje University starting on Monday upto the end of the month before relocating to another venue.

 

Twenty eight players have been summoned to start preparations for the Africa Zone V International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy tournament due March 10-16 in Ethiopia.

The two tournaments for the U-18 and U-20 boys' categories are expected  to attract the ten countries in the Africa Zone V group Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan and hosts Ethiopia .

According to Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) assistant secretary Augustin Mugalu, the team will camp in Ndejje University starting on Monday upto the end of the month before relocating to another venue.

Mugalu was however worried that the beginning of the semester at Ndejje would also affect the preparations.

 "We shall camp in Ndejje and later on shift to non-residential training when the semester in Ndejje resumes," Mugalu said.

"I know it will affect our preparations but we are focused on winning this year's tournament," Mugalu added.

Kenya is the defending champion in the youth category (U-18yrs) and Rwanda in junior category (U-20yrs).

In 2018, Uganda lost to Kenya in the semi-finals of the U-18 and also lost to Rwanda in the final of the U-20 in the tournament played at Mandela Stadium Namboole.

The players summoned for training include, Emmanuel Lukenge, Dickson Natyeera, Keith Begumisa, Chris Muzoora, Geofrey Ssekamaanya, Anuari Jakisa, Japheth Mugenyi Asiimwe and Nathan Wookulira, Hussein Okiria, Patrick Ayo, Kevin Ojacan and Saidi Mukisa.

The others are Ivan Ssentamu, Samuel Ssembeguya, Brian Ssevume, Denis Okwera, Nickson Aine, Brian Ogwang, Shakib Nyanzi, Ignatius Anzoleti, Lugenda Wasswa, Patrick Achia, Edgar Ssemirimu, Victor Obedmoth, Ivan Ssemwogerere, Buruhan Mivule and Paul Kitebe.

Richard Omara, Godwin Bingana, Timothy Okolimogo, Muhammad Matovu and Ivan Ssentamu complete the squad.

The coaches are Henry Acidri, Kongo Ibrahim, Fred Ayet.
