The region is one of the nine regions that were agreed upon by the leadership of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council general assembly in 2016 and are now in the process of formalizing them.

Why regions were created

According to Ahmed Kayongo, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council chairman electoral commission, the regions were created to decongest the centre so that services are brought nearer to the people.

It was also created to ensure there is unique planning and strategic interventions for the various regions and to ensure there is top-bottom planning of issues and equal response at the lower levels.

"We have over 1,2063 mosques across the country, over 65 Muslim districts and 9 regional Muslims, over 427 Muslim counties across the country, all with structures we want to have a coordinated Uganda Muslim supreme council that's the reason we chose to create regional administrations," he added.

Other reasons are to enhance the supervision and monitoring of programmes and activities of UMSC. "It has been taking a lot of time for officials to come from headquarters and mediate issues in districts, so we want immediate centres which can help in coordinating all those created structures," he added.

"We want to have bottom-top planning to see a better development and director of Muslim affairs in the country," added Ismail Kyoma, Ankole-Kigezi Muslim region.

He added that they are also making an attempt to prepare future leaders to occupy different levels of leadership in UMSC which has been a missing link and source of conflict. It will also help in resource mobilisation.

He commended the Muslim administration of Kigezi and Ankole for the good performance.

Uganda Muslim Supreme Council is close to 47 years.
