Several diplomats, ministers, and heads of institutions attended the dinner which featured performances by a cast of Ugandan and Chinese performers.

The event celebrates the ascension to power by communists led by Mao Zedong on October 1, 1949, four years after the end of World War II.

It marked the birth of modern China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which has overseen the country's transformation into a global power.

China's ambassador to Uganda, Zheng Zhuqiang said the 70th anniversary was a reflection of the country's journey to the top, fraught with challenges including aggression from western powers.

"The founding of the People's Republic of China put an end to the semi-colonial, semi-feudal society of the old China; put an end to the state of total disunity then; and put an end to the unequal treaties imposed on our country by foreign powers and to all unequal privileges that imperialist countries enjoyed in China. It was since that moment that Chinese people rose up, regained firm control of her own fate, and opened a new chapter for our national development and progress," ambassador Zhuqiang stated.

China is today the world's second-largest economy, only after the United States of America.  From 1949 to 2018, China's GDP increased by more than 450 times, Zhuqiang said.
