Justice Tibatemwa joins Seychelles court of appeal

Uganda's Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza has joined the Court of Appeal of Seychelles, the highest court on the land.

The 58-year-old is also serving as a Supreme Court judge in Uganda, following her appointment to the bench in 2015.

Last year, she was elected to the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) for a five-year term, together with seven judges from across the globe.

Tibatemwa was appointed to her new role by Seychelles' President Danny Faure on recommendations made by the Constitutional Appointments Authority. She took the oath at the State House

"One of the things I realised is that academic work, scholarly work or legal scholarship is actually an advantage to a person because we are talking about discussing principles of law, especially when you are serving in the highest court, the court which has the last say in dispute resolution," she is quoted by local media as saying following her swearing in.

"My contribution to Seychelles is rooted in the experience I have already had in courts in Uganda," she added.

"The Court of Appeal is the highest court; it is at the apex of the judicial hierarchy in Seychelles and that is very similar to the court where I sit because the Supreme Court, as it is called in Uganda, is at the apex of the judicial hierarchy in Uganda."
