Africa Junior Tennis: Uganda off to a slow start

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Both the boys and girls lost to Morocco and Egypt 3-0 respectively in their opening games late on Tuesday. 

 

Despite their loses, coach Edward Odocken believes the teams have made progess.

 

"Although our players lost, there has been an improvement in the way they play. This is a good competition which I believe will give them exposure. This is their first time to take part in this competition, so it gives them the courage and confidence when they play more games," stated Odocken.

 

A team of six players (three boys and three girls) with two coaches (John Oduke and Odocken) is in Casablanca for the six-day competition.

 

Troy Zziwa, Julius Junior Nyaata, and Allan Otto make up the boys team handled by Oduke, while Maggie Flavia Namaganda, Paula Awino, Eseza Muwanguzi are part of the girls' team guided by Odocken.

 

Zziwa and Namaganda are the favorites among the others to put up a good display in the competition that will be climaxed this Saturday.

 

All the players on the national side are beneficiaries of the Junior Tennis Initiative programme run by the International Tennis Federation together with Uganda Tennis Association.

 

Uganda made it to the finals after excelling in the regional qualifying teams' competition held in March in Kenya.
