KAMPALA - The battle against sexual immorality long began and must be won.

Clearly, that was the kind of vibe that ethics and integrity State minister Fr. Simon Lokodo exuded as he watched a heap of pornographic material go up in flames at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) headquarters in Kampala on Thursday.

He couldn't help but express his excitement.

"This is my best day ever as minister of ethics and integrity," said Lokodo, a renowned critic of pornography consumption and a champion of sexual morality.

"You have called me names, including 'Minister of mini-skirts', but I don't mind. I don't tolerate miniskirts because they are indecent," he laughed, evidently in high spirits.

The pornographic material, confiscated from film producers and promoters, was incinerated before the very eyes of film industry stakeholders, including film producers and publishers.

As per the Anti-Pornography Act 2014, the Pornography Control Committee is charged with the collection and destruction of pornographic objects and materials.

Lokodo has previously described pornography as the "deadliest disease in Uganda", and one that has hurt the moral fibre of many young people.

On Thursday, he said seeing any pornographic material makes her retch.

"Watching people in Adam's [and Eve's] suits, oh my God! How do you entertain such?"

'Extremely dangerous'

The minister condemned the group of 49 adults Police arrested recently in Kibuli, caught engaging in sex. "I asked the Police to pick them the way they were [naked] in order not to destroy evidence."

He said live streaming of pornography on especially social media and websites must be curbed.

"This thing [pornography] has become a necessity in some families and communities. The practice is extremely dangerous. You see a chicken or a dog and you are sexually aroused. This is the danger of pornographic materials," warned Lokodo.

He said he had to postpone his trip to Karamoja so as to participate in the burning of the seized pornographic material. His call to filmmakers was clear: Stop producing and distributing pornography!

It was a reunion of minister Lokodo and renowned local movie translator and commentator Marysmats Matovu, better known as VJ Junior.

Matovu is the the president of the Association of Film Practitioners Uganda Limited. In May 2017, he was arrested on the orders of the ethics minister for producing and circulating pornographic material on CDs, flash discs and other devices across the country.

This time round, it was a delightful meeting of Lokodo and Matovu.

The sensitization meeting was organized by UCC in which representatives of Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB), Uganda Media Council and UCC presented papers to educate filmmakers, publishers and producers about registration of their companies and copyright and intellectual property laws.

UCC executive director Godfrey Mutabazi advised film industry representatives not to expect funding from Government but that they should instead strive to produce good films because the industry is lucrative.
