Bribes interfering with LDU exercise - UPDF officials

The ongoing national recruitment of the LDUs in Buganda region, has registered cases of bribery, according to UPDF officials, this is interfering with the smooth running of the exercise.

Col Felix Abucha, the UPDF officer overseeing the recruitment of 96 LDUs at Kampala Secondary School for Kampala central threatened to arrest some of the Police and UPDF officials whose relatives were interfering with the exercise.

"Those soldiers who are bringing their relatives must go back to where they work, we don't want you here. If not we are going to arrest you", Abucho said.

Abucha further said that some of the officials from his team were soliciting for bribes and others trying to infiltrate for their dubious reasons, which he condemned.

Major Bilal Katamba, the spokesperson for this exercise warned the LC1s and any other officials including the residents involved in bribes to shun such acts.

"We clearly said this exercise is free. The LC1s must not accept any bribes from their residents", Katamba said.

Some of the local councilors, however, denied receiving bribes and rather pointed out the poor communication by the organisers.

Out of the thousands who turned out, only 96 will be recruited and taken for heavy military exercise.

The ongoing exercise is slated for Nakawa division on Wednesday.
