He takes over from Lameck Muwanga, last year’s winner who was not around to defend his title

Godfrey Lubega could not hide his excitement after he beat five other finalists to the Mr Kampala Bodybuilding Championship title at Mount Zion Hotel on Sunday.

It has been seven years of waiting for the 24-year-old, welterweight STS Gym Ovino muscleman before he could win his first major championship since starting out in 2012.

Lubega beat Yakubu Bin Hassan, Hassan Ssentongo, Vincent Kasibante, Eddy Namulinda and Godfrey Waigota in the middleweight category first, before he relegated Bagulli and Setaba to second and third overall places respectively to walk away with a trophy and sh300,000 cash courtesy of Iron Man Supplements.

But it wasn't an easy win for Lubega who had middle weight's Martins Bagulli and light heavy's David Setaba to contend with. But after careful scrutiny of the three, Lubega emerged as the judges pick despite Bagulli winning over several fans that turned up for the show.

"Bagulli was good but for me I still see him as an amateur because he is new on the stage. I have more experience and I have prepared for this day for the past seven years. You cannot just come from nowhere and win," Lubega said.

"I think my legs and lats spread-back made the difference. I'm now going to target the Mr Uganda championship but I also want to compete internationally in South Africa and the US if I get sponsorship," Lubega stated.

Lubega takes over from Lameck Muwanga, last year's winner who was not around to defend his title.

Power Center Gym's Bagulli said he will come back stronger in the Mr. Uganda Championship because he had some challenges prior to this tournament.

"I'm grateful for second position because I didn't expect it but I feel great and I thank God and the fans that have supported me. I would have wanted to win it but the judges know better," Bagulli who is only two years on stage said.

The 29th edition of the championship was sponsored by Iron Man Supplements, Bodybuilding First, Destiny Designers, Qibs Gym and Mt. Zion Hotel.
